BC sweeps Copperheads on Butte, Anaconda courts

The Maroons rolled on the tennis courts Thursday afternoon.

With some strong singles play leading the way, the Butte Central’s boys’ and girls’ teams swept Anaconda in non-conference duals. BC won both battles 6-1.

The boys played in Anaconda, while the girls played at Father Sheehan Park in Butte. The Class B Copperheads didn’t field a full team, and players play both doubles and singles on both sides.

On the girls’ side, BC’s Sarah Drew, Tricia Joyce and Emily St. John won in straight sets to lead the Maroons to victory.

At No. 2 singles, Maroon Zoe Sullivan dropped a 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 thriller to Tristen Nielsen.

“Sarah Drew had a great match closing out a close one in the first set and then rolling through her second with the win,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “Zoe Sullivan had an exciting match losing a close one in a third set tiebreaker 9-11. Both Sarah and Zoe are playing competitive matches, they keep on getting better each week and work hard.”

In girls’ doubles, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams played pro sets to eight.

Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn picked up a win at No. 1, while Sierra Pica and Ryan Trudnowski rolled at No. 2.

Larysa Blavatsky and Samantha Burton won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles

On the boys’ side, No. 1 singles player Carsen Boynton put the Copperheads on the board with a straight-sets win over BC’s Sam Sterns, who played doubles last week.

Zack Luebeck won a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 battle over Andy Myotte at No. 3. Tyge Yelenich at No. 2 and Jake McPherson at No. 4 posted straight-sets wins for the Maroons.

“My singles played great today; they are showing progress,” Hancock said. “We are sometimes weak on that side, so it was good to see a strong showing from them today.”

Cal Hollow and Sam Joyce won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles. Sam Johnston and Aidan Petritz won by forfeit at No. 2.

Shane Callahan and Colby Kline did the same at No. 3.

The Maroons will hit the road Saturday to take on Stevensville and Polson in Polson.
