LIVINGSTON — The Butte Central volleyball team repeated as champions of the Windy City Classic Saturday.

The Maroons battled back from a tough 28-26 loss to host Livingston to climb to the top of the 12-team tournament.

BC knocked off Jefferson High from Boulder 25-22, 25-15 in the championship match. That victory came after the Maroons knocked off Livingston 25-11, 25-14 in the semifinals. In the first match of Bracket play, BC knocked off Browning 25-14.

“The girls really came together after a tough first loss to Park to start the tourney and turned things around,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “When the going gets tough, that’s when we need to rise and the girls did that today. These girls have grit, everyone contributes and they never back down from the fight. It’s about having each other’s back out there, and making each other look good. When we start doing that we play as one and get things done.”

After the loss to Livingston in pool play, the Maroons beat Browning and Manhattan in 25-20 games. The Maroons then rolled the Boulder JV team 25-12 to capture the pool title.

Corbyn Holm’s 33 kills on the day paced the BC attack. Taylor Wahl added 23 kills, and Mollie Peoples killed 19.

Emily St. John, who killed 14, dished up 78 of BC’s 87 assists on the day. Holm added 34 digs to go along with five aces. Kassidy Criscuolo served eight aces for BC, and Olivia Bolton aced seven.

“We took this tourney last year, so it was exciting to see this new dynamic of a team go out there and get it done again,” Hancock said. “It’s been a great two weeks of tourney play and getting to see the competition outside of our conference. Looking forward to the start of our season next week at home against Dillon and seeing what we can bring to the table this year.”

The Maroons play host to the Beavers on Thursday.
