BC girls edge Yellowjackets, boys fall to Stevi

Butte Central’s tennis players were all smiles Thursday at Father Sheehan Park.

Stodden Park, however, was a totally different story.

Butte Central’s girls’ picked up a 4-3 Southwestern A win against Stevensville Thursday at Father Sheehan. The Maroon boys fell 6-1 to the Yellowjackets at Stodden.

“I am proud of how my singles players are competing, and I am proud of how my doubles teams are starting to work together in a competitive way,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “It’s fun to watch.”

The BC girls got two singles wins and two doubles wins.

Megan McPherson picked up a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 win over Jackie Westman at No. 3 singles. Zoe Sullivan won in straight sets at No. 4.

Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn won an epic battle at No. 1 doubles. The BC duo beat Danielle Haacke and Saya Shimazaki in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-4) thriller.

Ryan Trudnowski and Sierra Pica teamed to win at No. 2 doubles.

Even BC’s losses on the girls’ side were impressive. Samantha Burton and Savvannah Healy fell 8-6, 7-5 to Valeriya Aleynikova at No. 3 doubles, while Larysa Blavatksy dropped a three-set match to Shelby Spokas at No. 2 singles.

Also, Sarah Drew dropped a tough No. 1 singles match to Alyson Enzler.

BC's Sam Joyce returns volley in a doubles match with teammate Frank Hendrickson.

On the boys’ side, BC’s lone win came in straight sets by Frank Dwyer and Zack Luebeck at No. 3 doubles.

Sam Sterns lost in a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 battle to Payden Belcourt at No. 1 singles. The rest of the Maroon boys’ losses came in straight sets.

“What I like about them is they are competitive, and what the scores doesn’t show is the heart and hustle they put forth in those matches,” Hancock said. “Each meet they are competing stronger and getting better.

“Sam Stearns put up a tough match today, as did Tyge Yelenich.”

The Maroons are back in action Tuesday in Livingston. BC plays at Lewistown on May 9. Then the Maroons host the divisional tournament May 14-16.
