BC girls dominate in second half, down Panthers

By Derek Hendrickson

BELGRADE — The Butte Central girls’ basketball team opened the New Year with a dominant defensive performance in route to a 38-22 over the Lady Panthers Thursday night at the Special Events Center.

Central trailed by four at the break but used a 22-2 second half to pull away for the win.

BC head coach Meg Murphy praised the effort of the defense after the game.

“We got a lot better defensively since we last played before the break and it showed tonight,” she said of her young and improving team.

Central was led in scoring by freshman Emily St. John, who came off the bench to net 10 points.

The Maroons had a strong effort on the glass as well, led by sophomores Sierra Pica and Ryan Trudnowski who grabbed 12 and nine boards respectively.  Trudnowski led the team with three blocked shots and Pica swatted away two Panther shots to go with her three steals.

The balanced scoring effort also saw senior Shelby Paffhausen score nine while disrupting the Belgrade backcourt all night.  Freshman Mollie Peoples also scored eight points for the Maroons, who raised their record to 2-4 after their second straight win.

Junior Erin Singleton tossed in nine points lead the Panthers. She hit three 3-pointers in the first half before clamped down on her.

Tanna Holiday ripped down a team-leading 10 rebounds for Belgrade.

The Maroons will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Hamilton Broncs at the Maroon Activities Center.  That game tips off at 4 p.m.
