BC comeback falls short in loss to Loggers

LIBBY — A Butte Central fourth quarter comeback fell just short Friday night, and the Maroons found themselves on the wrong end of a 29-21 Western A football game.

Thomas McGree threw a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes to turn a 29-7 game into a one-score game. He hit Trevor Neumann for a 40-yard touchdown before hooking up with Luke Heaphy for a 60-yard TD.

BC’s defense gave the Maroons one more chance, and Central drove from midfield to the 28-yard line. That, however, is where the drive stalled when a fourth-and-7 pass fell incomplete with 50 second left.

The 6-0 Loggers built the 22-point lead in the first half.

Dawson Young scored on a 20-yard run before Jay Beagle hauled in a 19-yard TD pass from Jeff Offenbecher. The quarterback hit David Patterson for the 2-point conversion.

McGree scored on a 1-yard run, and David Granell booted the extra point to pull BC within 15-7.

Patterson got the Loggers back on the board by taking an interception  50 yards for a touchdown.

Butte Central coach Don Peoples Jr. said McGree was hit as he threw the ball.

“He played well. He made some really nice plays in the ballgame,” Peoples said of his senior quarterback. “He was under a lot of pressure from their pass rush all night.”

A 50-yard run by Offenbecher sent the Loggers to halftime leading 29-7.

Despite the score, Peoples said his team played well throughout.

“We moved the ball well the entire game,” the coach said. “It seemed like every time we had a good play or two we got hit by the penalty bug. There were an incredible amount of penalties in the game.”

Guido Ossello posted another big game, catching nine passes for 94 yards. Neumann grabbed five passes for 72 yards, and Matt Simkins made three catches for 21 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Easton Lakkala also caught a pass.

The Maroons (2-4) have three games left in the regular season. Two of them are at home, starting with next Friday’s game with Browning.

After playing host to Polson, the Maroons will wrap up the season Oct. 25 at Columbia Falls.

It will likely take four wins to make the playoffs, so the Maroons still control their destiny.
