BC boys buck Broncs, girls come close

Butte Central had a solid day on the tennis courts Friday.

The Maroons knocked off Hamilton 6-1 in a boys’ match at the Father Sheehan Park courts. The BC girls fell 4-3 on day head coach Bernie Carey called “promising.”

On the boys’ side, Patrick Kenney and Jesse Reinke won in straight sets. Kenney rolled, while Reinke edged Hamilton’s Trever Richards 6-4, 6-4.

Frank Hendrickson pulled out a 7-2 tiebreaker victory over Renato Schuartz.

“Our boys showed a lot of determination today,” Carey said. “Jesse and Frank had incredibly close singles matches and handled the pressure like true veterans. Those wins sealed the deal for us today.”

Kale Guldseth and Tyler Trudnowski won a doubles match in straight sets. The teams of Sam Sterns and Sam Joyce and  Jim Martz and Youlong Lin won by default.

Jeremy Hankel picked up Hamilton’s lone victory, knocking off Bryce Noctor.

For the BC girls, Mederios Babb claimed her first varsity victory, knocking off Autumn Rose in a 9-7 thriller to highlight BC’s day.

Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn teamed up to beat Sophia Schmit and Theresa Trinh in a 7-4 tiebreaker, while Sarah Drew and Ryan Trudnowski improved to 2-0 on the season with a straight-set victory.

Larysa Blavatsky and Kara Criscuolo also played singles for the Maroons, falling to tough competition. BC’s Megan McPherson and Kathi Matthies competed in doubles for the Maroons.

“Great showing by the girls today,” Carey said. “They are improving faster than I anticipated, and have already surpassed our total wins from last year. It’s looking promising.”

The Maroons hit the road for their third match of the week on Saturday. They play at Dillon at noon.
