Athletes of the Week, Butte High divisional mat champs — Butte Sports

The Butte High boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams both placed second to Flathead High of Kalispell in the Western AA Divisional high school wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Capital High gym in Helena.
The Butte High performances were led by boys’ champions Bradey Doyle at 113 pounds, Ryder McEwen at 132 and Maverick McEwen at 170. Sisters Nevaeh  and Sophie Grunhuvd ruled the 126-pound and 132-pound girls’ brackets, respectively.
Doyle, a freshman, defeated Jayce Kincaid of Missoula Sentinel 13-8 for his title, sophomore Ryder McEwen pinned Aiden Diowning in 3 minutes, 14 seconds for his crown and his older brother, Maverick, won at 160 pounds on a 4:34 pin over Dillon Gunlock of Missoula Hellgate. Maverick McEwen won a Washington state championship last year before returning to Butte for his senior year.
The Grunhuvds  achieved similar victories in the girls’ championship round. Naveah Grunhuvd pinned Kiera Lackey of Flathead in 1:45 and Sophie Grunhuvd pinned Lucia Schlapfer of Missoula Big Sky in 1:44.
The champs will lead Butte High’s delegation into the state AA tourney this coming weekend at The Metra in Billings. Congratulations from Butte Sports!
