LOS ANGELES — Amie Opie is a world champion.
The Butte cyclist won gold medal in her division in the 10 kilometer cycling road race Thursday at the Special Olympics World Games.
Opie, 42, won the Division 9 title by finishing the race in 20 minutes, 42.37 seconds. Veronika Verboten of Slovenia won the silver medal in 21:17.64, while Tamara Segers of Belgium took the bronze in 21:40.56.
Opie, who grew up in Walkerville, is a long-time employee at Stokes in Butte (formerly Albertsons). She works at the deli counter.
