Americans sting Cobras for shootout victory

The Great Falls Americans escaped the Butte Community Ice Center with a 3-2 shootout victory Saturday night. (Stats)

Great Falls edged Butte 2-1 in the shootout for the NA3HL victory. Connor Doyle and Alex Jackson scored shootout goals for the Americans. Robin Bagley scored for Butte.

The game went to overtime and then the shootout because Nick Decarlo scored off an assist from Zane Cluphf and Kyle Chambers 9 minutes, 50 seconds into the third period. That goal knotted the game at 2.

Lucas Gudz and Butte’s Kyler Garsjo traded goals in the first period. Bagley and Randy Yeakley each assisted on the Garsjo goal.

Alex Jackson put Great Falls up 2-1 with a goal late in the second period.

Trever Mellen turned away 32 shots to get the win between the pipes for the Americans. Butte goalie Tommy Near saved 48 shots for the Cobras.

Next up on the Butte schedule is a Feb. 5-6 trip to take on the Yellowstone Quake.
