Butte got on the board first when Caelin Chinery scored a goal that was assisted by Cade Wessman and Jonathan Schoof. Just 1 minute, 34 seconds into the game.
Hunter Maschke and Joshua Serino scored in the first period to put the Americans up 2-1. Tyler Sunagel and Jackson Henningsgard scored in the second period.
The Americans outshot the Cobras 62-36, and Ben Winkler turned away 35 shots in the win.
Caleb Cross registered 58 saves in goal for the Cobras, who fell to 3-7-2 on the season. Great Falls improved to 6-3-2.
The Cobras will play host to the Missoula Bighorns at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Butte Community Ice Center.
