Alberta leads Montana at Junior Ryder Cup

MEDICINE HAT, Alberta — The Montana boys and girls will be playing from behind when the Montana-Alberta Junior Ryder Cup concludes Wednesday.

Alberta took sizable leads during the first day of play Tuesday at the Desert Blume Golf Club. The Alberta girls lead Montana 12-6, while the Alberta boys hold a 13-5 advantage over Montana.

On the girls’ side, Alberta won 7-2 in four ball and 5-4 in alternate shot.

Kylie Esh of Missoula and Kinsey Irvin of Lewistown teamed to score 3 and a half points for Montana. They won both their matches.

Butte’s Tricia Joyce teamed with Laurel Ward of Bozeman to score two and a half points. Joyce and Ward lost their four-ball match, but picked up an alternate-shot win.

On the boys’ side, Alberta doubled up Montana 6-3 in four ball. The Canadians won 7-2 in alternate shot.

Missoula’s Bucky Crippen and Bozeman’s Jack Thorsen picked up a pair of wins to score all of Montana’s five points.

The Montana players qualified for the Montana-Alberta Junior Ryder Cup during the Montana State Junior Championship in June. Joyce, a soon-to-be Butte Central junior, won a state title at that tournament in Shelby.
