Bulldogs finish sixth at Class AA Duals

GREAT FALLS – Butte High’s wrestling team won a pair of duals en route to a sixth-place finish at Saturday’s Class AA Duals in Great Falls.

The Bulldogs opened with a 36-30 win over Helena High before falling to eventual champion Billings Senior in the quarterfinals, 50-15. Butte then came back with a convincing 49-15 victory over Billings Skyview, but lost its last two – 44-27 to Great Falls High and then 35-30 to Missoula Big Sky in the fifth-place match.

“That was the last of the real ‘meat grinders’ we’ll see before divisionals,” said Butte High head coach Cory Johnston of his team’s five-match day.

Butte’s decisive win over Skyview avenged an earlier loss to the Falcons, while Great Falls’ nod over Butte High came after the Bulldogs beat the Bison in the Street Duals in December.

“Great Falls got back a couple of kids, and it was a matchup thing with them,” Johnston said. “But the kids really wrestled ’em hard.”

Butte High travels to Dillon on Thursday for a dual meet with the Beavers, then will participate in a mixer put on by Butte Central Friday at the MAC. That competition replaces a meet in Billings next weekend that has been canceled.

“That was actually kind of a blessing,” Johnston said. “It saves us a long road trip and gives us a chance to recharge our batteries for divisionals.”
