Six young weightlifters booked a trip to Atlanta Saturday during the Butte Barbell Nationals Qualifier at Copper City CrossFit.
Haley Carver, Darby Harrington, Spencer Callaghan, Riley Gelling and Mia Spencer of Butte and Naomi Bain of Bozeman qualified for the 2017 USA Weightlifting National Youth Championships.
Nationals will be held later this spring in Atlanta.
Harrington, whose year of birth is 2007, is the youngest to qualify. Each competitor was listed by year of birth instead of age, with Carver and Callaghan born in 2006, Gelling in 2004, Spencer in 2001 and Bain in 2004.
Spencer and Bain qualified while lifting in the adult session.
Gelling’s story is one of a comeback. He spent more than a year recovering from a bone condition in his femur.
“He still continued to train, using only his one leg and doing primarily upper body and core exercises,” said Butte coach Anthony Fields. “About six months ago, (his doctor) cleared him to start working out that leg again. He decided to do this weightlifting meet, after having to watch his little sister do a couple while he was still recovering. Then the kid puts up a qualifying total in his first ever weightlifting meet.”
Other youth lifters from Butte to compete were Stella Callaghan, Sophia Gelling, Brayden Giop, Peyton Smith, Cohen Andrews and Trey Driscoll.
The weightlifters who were just shy of qualifying will get one more crack at it April 29th at a qualifier at Altitude Athletics in Bozeman.
In all, 25 lifters, youth and adult, competed in the event.
