WHITEFISH — Montana Western’s stunning 42-35 win over then-No. 5 Montana Tech Saturday in Dillon has led to honors pouring in for the Bulldogs.
Western players Bennett Gibson, Conlan Smith and Mark Kharchenko swept the Frontier Conference player of the week awards. The league made that announcement today.
Gibson took home the offensive honor, Smith received the defensive award, and Kharchenko earned the special teams accolade.
Offensive Player of the Week
Gibson is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior quarterback from Mount Vernon, Washington. He led the Bulldogs to victory by completing 22 of 38 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for two scores, including the game-winner with 1 minute, 59 seconds left.
Jed Fike of Montana Tech, Major Ali of Carroll College, Darius-James Peterson of College of Idaho and Kai Quinn of Eastern Oregon were also nominated.
Defensive Player of the Week
Smith is 6-foot, 290-pound sophomore nose tackle from Idaho Falls, Idaho. Smith recorded six solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, three tackles for loss (-5) and 1.5 quarterback sacks.
Nic Amnesty of Montana Tech, Michal, Arenas of Eastern Oregon and McBride Galt of Carroll College were also nominated.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Kharchenko is a 6-3, 170-pound freshman kicker from Colville, Washington. He was 6 for 6 in PAT’s on a blustery day.
Derrick Holt of Montana Tech and Calvin Connors of Eastern Oregon were also nominated.
