Steelheads blank Cobras in series opener

McCALL, Idaho — The Idaho Jr. Steelheads skated past the Butte Cobras 2-0 Friday night in the opener of the Northwest Division championship series of the Thorne Cup Playoffs. Stats

Oleg Losev and John Deroche each scored goals, and Sergei Pysarenko pitched a shutout as the defending champion Steelheads moved to within one win of the final four.

Game 2 is at 7 p.m. Saturday, and the Cobras must win to force a Game 3 on Sunday afternoon.

Idaho outshot Butte 48-18 in the victory. Butte net minder Eric Ahlberg turned away 46 shots to keep the Cobras in the game.

Idaho took the lead with 4 minutes, 56 seconds left in the first period when Losev found the back of the net.

The scored stayed at 1-0 until Doreche added an insurance goal 1:01 into the third period.
