KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The 44-team field for the NAIA national volleyball tournament was officially announced this morning, and Montana Tech does not need to play an opening-round match.
The top 19 seeds and championship host Morningside automatically advance to the national championship final site in Sioux City, Iowa. That includes the Orediggers, the regular-season and tournament champions of the Frontier Conference.
Last year, the Orediggers needed to win an opening-round match at home before advancing to the tournament.
The tournament begins with three days of pool play Nov. 28-30. The top teams in each pool advance onto the elimination bracket, beginning Dec. 1. Twenty-seven teams are back from last year’s tournament, including defending national champion Hastings (Nebraska).
Opening-round matches will be held on campus sites on Saturday.
The Orediggers are the only team from the Frontier Conference to qualify. Tech beat Rocky Mountain College in a five-set thriller in Saturday’s Frontier tournament championship match at the Carroll College P.E. Center in Helena.
