BILLINGS — The Mile High All-Stars of Butte placed second in the Montana 9-10 State Tournament this weekend.
The Butte boys fell 13-1 Sunday in the championship game to Billings Boulder/Arrowhead. The victors completed district and state play with a 14-0 record.
Mile High beat Heights Little League 9-7 and Great Falls Little League 13-2 in loser-out games to earn the right to challenge Billings Boulder/Arrowhead for the title. The Butte team would have had to beat the Billings team twice to win the double-elimination tournament.
Two weeks earlier, Mile High won the District 2 title in Butte. That followed a seeding tournament in Great Falls.
The season came to an end for both teams because there is no Little League regional tournament for the 9-10 age group. The Mile High All-Stars were the final team playing baseball — at any level — from the Mining City.
Members of the Mile High team are Will Stepan, Mason Newgard, Gunner Reopelle, Colby Gordon, Zach Sawyer, Tocher Lee, Colton Shea, Matthew Donaldson, Cayde Stajcar, Karsen McEwen, Brenner Booth, Lucas Harris-Huerta and Trapper Stajcar.
Matt Stepan is the team’s manager. He’s assisted by Luke Stajcar and Tucker Thatcher. Hal Hoagland is the hitting coach, while George Riojas is the special assistant.
