KALLISPELL — Butte High juniors Ellie Kuoppola and Destiny Soennichsen lost out of the Class AA State tennis tournament with two losses Thursday.

The Bulldogs, though, didn’t go down without a fight.

“They went down swinging,” Butte High coach Mavis Bentley said. “They played really well. They played well together. They played smart.”

Kuoppola and Soennichsen fell 6-3, 6-2 to Helena Capital twins Bridget and Fiona Powers in the first round. The then fell in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 battle to Great Falls Russell’s Ally Dube and Erynn Murphy.

“It was a battle right to the final point,” Bentley said. “One point her or there could have made the difference.”

Kuoppola and Soennichsen, who made up the No. 2 doubles team for the Bulldogs all season, advanced to state by placing fourth at the Eastern AA Divisional tournament last week in Billings.

They knocked off Butte High’s No. 1 team to qualify for state.
