Hillcrest once again defends track title

The Hillcrest Hornets are still the kings of track in the Mining City.

Hillcrest once again defended its title at the Butte Grade School Track Meet Wednesday at the Charlie Merrifield Track.

The Hornets scored 468 team points  on the picture-perfect day to bring home the title for at least the sixth year in a row. Whittier placed second with 316 team points. (Team scores, Individual results)

Margaret Leary and West tied for third at 172, while Butte Central placed fifth at 101. Rounding out the school were Kennedy at 93, Emmerson at 67, Ramsay at 28 and Montessori at 9.

A pair of Margaret Leary sixth graders claimed the pentathlete title.

Abby Mellott won the girls title with a record-tying 50 points. Mellott and Elsa Janney (Hillcrest 2005) as the only girls to achieve a perfect score of 50.

Sean Ossello captured the boys crown with 46 points.
