Defending champs start fast, stop Butte High girls

HELENA — Helena High got off to a fast start to its title defense Tuesday night.

The Bengals outscored Butte High 21-8 in the first quarter, and the defending Class A State champs beat the Bulldogs 65-30 in a non-conference girls’ basketball game.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

Payton Aasved came off the bench to score 13 points, and recent University of Montana commit Jamie Pickins poured in 12 points to lead the Bengals, who led 35-15 at halftime.

Ally Cleverly scored 11 to lead the Bulldogs. Brittney Tierney tossed in 10. The Bulldogs also got five from Aspen Lovshin and two apiece from Kira Mortensen and Haley Herron.

The Bulldogs are back in action next Tuesday night when they play host to Missoula Big Sky. That game will be at the Butte Civic Center.
