Some of the top track athletes in the state are scheduled to appear in the Mining City Friday afternoon as Butte High hosts the annual Swede Dahlberg Invitational at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
Butte High activities director Chuck Merrifield said all 14 Class AA teams are expected to compete with the Bulldogs and Butte Central Maroons in the boys-only and varsity-only meet.
Senior Bryce Gallagher and freshman Tommy Mellott paced the Bulldogs boys in a meet on the Charley Merrifield Track on Tuesday.
Gallagher continued his blistering start to the 2017 season by running to victory in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Mellott qualified for the Class AA State meet by winning the long jump with a mark of 20-feet, 10 inches.
Ty Peterson won the pole vault by clearing 13, which was six inches off his best mark of the season, while Cade O’Neill won the javelin and Dakota Eggers ran to victory in the 400. Butte High also picked up wins in both relays.
Nate McGree led the Maroons in that meet. He won the triple jump, missing the qualifying standard by 2 inches with a leap of 41-6. Teammate and fellow senior Blake Burton won the 100.
The Butte High girls’ track team will compete in the Great Falls Invitational on Saturday. The BC girls and junior varsity boys will run in Belgrade the same day.
