Four Butte Central players will represent the Maroons at the Class A State tennis meet next week in Kalispell.
Butte Central’s No. 1 doubles teams on both sides will be making the trip after the Southwestern A Divisional tournament concluded Friday at Stodden and Father Sheehan parks in Butte. (Brackets)
Senior Emily St. John and sophomore Tricia Joyce teamed up to place second on the girls’ doubles side. Junior Cameron Johnson and freshman Guido Ossello placed third on the boys’ side.
The top for individuals and doubles team move on.
Overall, Butte Central coach Becky Hancock was excited with how her players represented at the divisional tournament.
“This is the best tennis we’ve played since I’ve been here,” the coach said.
St. John and Joyce beat Corvallis’ Emilie Thomas and Kristen Saturday 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals. They then fell 6-2, 7-5 to Tessa Sawyer and Adrianne Southam of Dillon in the championship match.
Claire Pickett and Connie Watt of Corvallis beat Thomas and Saturday for third place.
Butte Central’s other doubles teams bowed out in consolation play Friday. Tess Riordan and Sophie Sullivan lost their first match of the day, while Shea Davis and Prestynn Weldon reached the consolation quarterfinals before falling.
In singles, BC’s Zoe Sullivan beat out teammate Savannah Healy in a consolation match. Dillon’s Nicole Hritsco beat Sullivan in the consolation quarterfinals.
On the boys’ side, Johnson and Ossello fell 6-2, 6-1 to eventual champions Todd Nordahl and Kyson Wilson of Dillon in the semifinals.
They knocked off Luke Peterson and Mark Southam of Dillon in a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 battle for third place.
Nordahl and Wilson beat Justin Catanach and Alec Sangster of Corvallis 6-1, 6-2 in the title tilt.
Maroons Colby Kline and Shane Callahan reached Day 2 of the tournament before bowing out.
Dillon swept the team titles, while Corvallis placed second on both sides.
The Dillon boys scored 51 points to top the fourth-team field. Corvallis scored 33, followed by Hamilton at 27 and Butte Central at 12.
The girls from Dillon scored 48 points to outpace Corvallis by eight points. BC took third at 23, followed by Hamilton at 8.
