The Bozeman boys and girls swept a five-team track meet at Bulldog Memorial Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The story of the day, though, was that a handful of qualifying standards were reached by Butte High and Butte Central athletes in the meet that started and ended in the rain. In between the rain drops was some good track weather, and some local athletes made the best of it. (Team scores, Individual results)

Butte High saw Tommy Mellott, Hailee Regan and Josie Klapan qualify for the Class AA State tournament, which is in Butte. Butte Central saw Rachael McGree reach a qualifying standard for the Class A meet, which is in Laurel.

Mellott, a freshman, jumped 20 feet, 10 inches to win the long jump with a qualifying mark. He beat classmate and teammate Quinn Sullivan by 4 inches in the event. The qualifying mark is 20-9.

Regan, a junior, posted a mark of 35-6 to win the shot put and qualify for state, while Klapan, a sophomore, launched the javelin 118-4 for a victory and a state berth.

McGree, a senior future Montana State Bobcat, won the long jump with a mark of 16-3 ½ to qualify in one of the events she captured the state title in a year ago.

Bozeman scored 118 team points to take the boys’ title. Butte High was second at 122, followed by BC at 45, Townsend at 32 and Ennis at 31.

The girls finished in the same order, with Bozeman posting a victorious 167 1/3 points Butte High notched 129, followed by BC at 62 1/3, Townsend at 56 and Ennis at 20.

On the girls’ side, Butte High saw Mar Sorini run to victories in the 100- and 200-meter races. Abby Dodge won the triple jump in 33-8 ½, missing the qualifying mark by 3 and a half inches.

Also, Caitlin Carmody placed second in the long jump, and the Bulldogs ran to the 1,600-meter relay win.

The BC girls got a second-place showing form Lindsay McGree in the 100 and a victory in the 400-meter relay.

On the boys’ side, BC senior Nate McGree missed the qualifying standard by 2 inches with a 41-6 leap in the triple jump. That mark was good enough for first place Tuesday.

Maroon teammate Blake Burton won the 100 in 11.79 seconds.

Bryce Gallagher once again looked good in the hurdles. The Butte High senior ran to victory in both 110 and 300.

Bulldog junior Ty Peterson cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault. He attempted 13-9 as the meet closed, and just missed. He already qualified for state with a 13-6 mark earlier in the season.

Other Butte High boys’ victories came from Cade O’Neill in the javelin, Dakota Eggers in the 400 and both relay teams.

Butte High got second-place showings from Jake Vetter in the 400, Gabe Tierney in the 300 hurdles and Tevyn Roth in the 400.

The Butte High and Butte Central boys will be back in action Friday when the Bulldogs host the annual Dahlberg Invitational.

Butte High’s girls’ team will compete at the Great Falls Invitational on Saturday. BC’s girls head to Belgrade on the same day.
