It might have been the first meet of the season, but the Butte High boys’ and girls’ swim teams looked like they were in mid-season form Friday.
The Bulldogs opened the season at the Helena Dual against Helena High and Helena Capital at the Butte Family YMCA. Bulldog coach Lynn Shrader called the meet a success. (Results)
“I am very impressed with how the team swam for a first meet,” Shrader said. “I have some freshman and sophomores who are very close to making state times already. This year I have 46 swimmers out — a lot who have never swam. They are working hard and doing well. I cannot wait to see how we swim next week at the Butte Invite.”
On the girls’ side, sophomore Catherine Russo took first in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 200 individual medley. She swam a personal best time in the 200 IM.
Senior Elsie Dickerson captured in the 100 breaststroke, while taking second in the 200 free. She had a personal best time in the breast.
Freshman Anna Trudnowski took first in the 100 backstroke, and in swimming the 100 fly for the first time ever, she placed third. Senior Cynthia Trudgeon took second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 free. Other top 3 finishes were Devin Amtmann, Kennedi Ferriter, Mia Jefferson and Sidney Christie.

Butte High didn’t have all of its swimmers competing Friday because illness prevented several from getting in the required 10 practices. The teams only had 13 days to get those practices in.
The Butte Invitational is set for next Saturday at the Y.
