MISSOULA — Call it a major breakthrough for University of Montana freshman Abby Dodge.
The 2017 Butte High graduate cleared 5 feet, 5 ¾ inches Saturday to win the Montana Open high jump at Dornblaser Field.
Dodge’s previous best was 5-1. Now, she holds the Grizzlies top mark of the season.
“Abby finally hit some positions and did some things she’s been trying to do all year,” Grizzly coach Brian Schweyen said. “That was a lifetime best and a big jump and breakthrough for her.”
Dodge was one of three former Butte High Bulldogs to have a big day Saturday. Fellow UM freshman Mijah McLeod ran a leg on the Grizzlies’ winning 1,600-meter relay team. McLeod, Carly Smiedala, Madeline Hamilton and Emily Cheroske won the race with a time of 3 minutes, 51.61 seconds.
Also, Montana State true freshman Joby Rosenleaf ran to third place in the 1,500-meter race. Rosenleaf crossed in 4:56.65.
